"After a year of stacking shelves in Hamleys, I had my first lucky break and was invited to join B&Q as its first environment manager. This was one of the first such roles in the UK and it led to me being involved in the creation of the Forest Stewardship Council, the peat dilution strategy, paint labelling and supplier environmental auditing while I was at B&Q.... Since then I founded my own company, Single Planet Living and I continue to help businesses develop sustainable development strategies....
"In 2010, with others I launched the Global Association for Corporate Sustainability Officers (GACSO) because we believe that sustainability should have more resonance with businesses than CSR; because there is a need to codify the role of the sustainability professional; and because a support network would benefit the individuals within the role. I am the acting CEO.
"In March 2012 I was appointed Environmental Sustainability Director at the Business in the Community. As part of my new role I am responsible for its established environment campaign www.bitc.org.uk/environment; The Prince's Mayday Network www.maydaynetwork.com; START www.startuk.org and ways2work – www.ways2work.bitc.org.uk."
"Alan is currently the Sustainability Director of Business and the Community (BITC) where he oversees all their Corporate Sustainability programmes and is the chairman of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Environment Partnership. He chairs the UK Task Force on Sustainable Growing Media which is creating a roadmap for the UK gardening and horticulture industry to only use sustainable growing materials. Alan advised the Virgin Group on sustainable development for 6 years and still advises the Virgin Earth Challenge, an initiative to develop technology to recycle CO2 direct from the air into commercially viable products. He is a founder of the Global Association of Corporate Sustainability Officers (GACSO). For nine years he was a commissioner with the Sustainable Development Commission and he introduced the concept of 'choice editing' into the product policy debate. Alan is a visiting professor at the Plymouth and Exeter University Business Schools and was awarded the OBE in June 1998. In 2005 the US-based Rainforest Alliance presented him with a lifelong award for his contribution towards finding solutions to forest loss by the timber trade. www.dralanknight.com
