"Dr. Clewell has spent over twenty years conducting research on the access of underrepresented groups (specifically, racial/ethnic minorities and women) to science, mathematics, and engineering fields. Much of her early research in this area is contained in a book, Breaking the Barriers: Helping Female and Minority Students Succeed in Mathematics and Science, which summarizes findings from a study of 163 intervention programs in STEM. In 1999-2000 she served as the Executive Director of the Congressionally-appointed Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science, Engineering, and Technology Development (CAWMSET), based at the National Science Foundation. Other recent work includes an analysis of Prospects data to determine the effect of teacher race/ethnicity on student achievement in mathematics and reading; an evaluation of the National Science Foundation’s Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP) involving 27 alliances of approximately 200 institutions nationwide; and a study of effective schools in two large urban school districts. A former associate editor of the journal Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis (EEPA), she has edited a number of special issues of other journals and authored and co-authored several journal articles, book chapters, and monographs on the topics of her research. She is currently writing a book on effective schools for low-income, urban students."
