Chimurenga, "a pan African publication of writing, art and politics has been in print since March 2002. It was founded by Ntone Edjabe. The journal is published on the page three times/year, online monthly and through themed performances called "Chimurenga Sessions.""
Ntone Edjabe notes that "I am really proud of the fact that none of our funding for writing, editing or distribution comes from well-meaning NGOs or corporate advertising. Many publications started off this way and were hijacked by academia or business. At Chimurenga everyone contributes a bit of skill, time, and the cover charge. We rely entirely on our readers. If they do not support it then it has no reason to exist. That is my philosophy."
Chimurenga magazine is a project of the Kalakuta Trust. The Trust recently received R 160,000 to produce Chimurenga magazine from the Media Development and Diversity Agency.
