About ALEC
ALEC is a corporate bill mill. It is not just a lobby or a front group; it is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, corporations hand state legislators their wishlists to benefit their bottom line. Corporations fund almost all of ALEC's operations. They pay for a seat on ALEC task forces where corporate lobbyists and special interest reps vote with elected officials to approve “model” bills. This is a partial list of Illinois politicians that are known to be involved in, or previously involved in, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). It is a partial list. (If you have additional names, please add them with a citation. The names in this original list were verified as of posting.)

House of Representatives

  • Rep. Tom Bennett (R-106), registered member, Attended 2019 ALEC Annual Meeting [1]
  • Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-100) paid 2-year ALEC membership fee on May 6, 2017[2]
  • Rep. Tom Demmer (R-90) paid ALEC $175 on April 11, 2017 for "registration," most likely for ALEC's spring task force summit.[3]
  • Rep. James B. Durkin (R-82), told a constituent in October 2012 that he receives position papers and correspondence from ALEC and intends to attend the 2013 ALEC Annual Meeting in Chicago[4]
  • Rep. Mary Flowers (D-31), ALEC Health and Human Services Task Force Member[5] - Rep. Flowers' staffer reported in May 2012 that Flowers is no longer a member of ALEC.[6] See Legislators Who Have Cut Ties to ALEC for more.
