The JASON Committee is described by Naomi Oreskes thus : the reclusive group of scientists with high-level security clearances who gather annually to advise the U.S. government; its members have included some of the most brilliant scientists of our era. Dr. Oreskes also writes "Even today few people have heard of Jason. It was established in 1960 at the height of the cold war when a group of physicists who had helped to develop the atomic bomb proposed a new organisation that would – to quote one of its founders – “inject new ideas into national defence”.
One member of the JASON committee responsible for its 1979 report recently recalled briefing some members of the U.S. government, one of whom asked, "So when will these effects happen?" When the scientists replied, "Well, maybe in 40 years," the official replied, "Get back to me in 39".
