Lin Hai, "computer scientist-software engineer. He gave 30,000 Chinese e-mail addresses to a U.S. based pro-democracy newsletter distributor so people could receive uncensored information despite government restrictions. For this offense, he was tried, sentenced, and served two years of imprisonment prior to emigrating to the U.S. Hai receives this award for recognition of his exceptional courage in supporting the right of free circulation of information in China."
