Nils Petter Gleditsch
Nils Petter Gleditsch "is a former member of the GECHS Scientific Steering Committee (1999-2005). He was trained as a sociologist at the University of Oslo and also studied international relations at the University of Michigan. He has been associated with the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) since 1964, since 1988 as Research Professor. He served as the Director of PRIO for three years in the 1970s. He has edited Journal of Peace Research since 1983. Since 1993 he has been Professor of International Relations in the Department of Sociology and Political Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, but his main base remains in Oslo. He now heads the working group on ‘Environmental Factors in Civil War’ at PRIO’s Centre for the Study of Civil War, funded by the Research Council of Norway as one of Norway’s 13 national centers of excellence. He has served as a Visiting Professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University. Gleditsch is the President-elect of the International Studies Association and will serve his term from March 2008 to March 2009. His most recent books in English are: Environmental Conflict (co-edited with Paul Diehl, Westview, 2001) and Globalization and Armed Conflict (co-edited with Gerald Schneider & Katherine Barbieri, Rowman & Littlefield, 2003). He has published articles in American Political Science Review, European Journal of Population, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Political Geography, and a number of other academic journals. In August 2007, guest editors Gleditsch and Ragnhild Nordås will publish a special issue of Political Geography on ‘climate change and conflict’, based on papers from the GECHS workshop Human Security and Climate Change."
