"A Chartered Accountant, he spent 12 years with KPMG from 1975 to 1987 where his principal clients included Nestle SA, TSB plc and Johnson Matthey plc. In 1987, he joined Chrysalis as Corporate Development Director. He was responsible for Chrysalis’s initial investment in the radio sector in 1992 and became CEO of Chrysalis Radio in 1994, before becoming Group CEO in 2000. In these roles, he masterminded the development of Chrysalis into one of the UK’s leading radio groups through a brand-led strategy that saw Heart, Galaxy and LBC become major forces in UK commercial radio. In July 2007, Chrysalis Radio was sold to Global Radio for £170 million, realising a profit on disposal of almost £100 million.
"In September 2007, Richard was appointed Chairman of Virgin Radio by its owner SMG plc with a brief to realise SMG’s investment. This led to the successful sale of the business in June 2008 to Times of India for £53 million.
"In addition to his executive career, Richard has held a number of non-executive positions including NED of Metro Radio plc (1990-1995), Chairman of Channel 3 News Ltd (2001) and NED of Virgin Mobile Holdings (UK) plc (2005-6) prior to its acquisition by NTL. In October 2008, Richard became Chairman of Boomerang Plus plc, an AIM-listed independent television production group. In March 2010, Richard was appointed Chairman of Prince's Trust Trading Limited, the commercial events arm of the Prince’s Trust. Richard is also a Trustee of the Radley Foundation. "
