Thomas W. Merrick
Thomas W. Merrick, Ph.D., Vice Chair of the International Women's Health Coalition.
"An internationally renowned author and expert on population and development, Thomas W. Merrick was a World Bank economist from 1992 to 2001, serving as a senior adviser in population and reproductive health. Prior to this position he was President of the Population Reference Bureau, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting public understanding of population's role in political, social, and economic issues. Currently a Professor of Global Health at George Washington University and a World Bank consultant, Dr. Merrick spoke recently on behalf of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), testifying to the importance of investing in reproductive health as a means to ensure that poor women can escape poverty. Dr. Merrick holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught at Georgetown University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil. He has field experience in more than a dozen countries and has served on boards and consultancies for various organizations, including the U.S. Agency for International Development, UNFPA, the Ford Foundation, the Macarthur Foundation, the Hewlett Foundation, the American Public Health Association, and the National Academy of Sciences."
